Since 2004, NCLR's Institute for Hispanic Health has engaged in multiple efforts pertaining to mental-health-related issues among Hispanics. Through those efforts, it has demonstrated that community-based education programs have great potential to increase awareness and promote positive behavioral changes among Latinos. NCLR's work in this arena has primarily focused on training Latino community members as promotores de salud (lay health educators). Furthermore, NCLR has actively engaged in discussions with academics, researchers, policymakers, and community leaders to better understand and address the barriers Latinos face in accessing mental health services and care.
